La Mesa
One of the oldest official cities in the East County, La Mesa is known as the "Jewel of the Hills."
Although its name means 'the table,' La Mesa's topography features a number of rolling hills, including Mt. Helix and Grossmont Summit. Houses in this upscale area include many California ranch homes and Spanish-style haciendas.
Mt. Helix, with its beautiful 360 degree view and amphitheater, is one of La Mesa's most well-known locations. On a clear day, visitors to its memorial site can see west to the ocean as well as east and south to the county's foothills. Despite the spiral road that leads to its apex, Mt. Helix is actually named for a snail that was discovered there in the 19th century.
In 2012, the city of La Mesa will celebrate 100 years of incorporation.
